City of Rockford Human Services Department

LIHEAP Energy Assistance Program Begins

The City of Rockford Human Services Department announces the beginning of the 2010/2011 LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) for Winnebago and Boone Counties.  LIHEAP helps qualified low income families pay on their energy utility bills with a one-time grant that is applied directly to their utility accounts.  LIHEAP has separate program start dates for three types of households:  those who are senior or disabled; those whose energy utilities are disconnected, and the general public.

Beginning September 1, qualified households occupied by a senior citizen, or a person who receives Social Security Disability benefits or has benefits pending, can call one of the attached sites for information and to make an appointment for assistance.  To qualify, households must have at least one disabled family member or senior over the age of 60.  Required documentation must include photo ID, proof of income for the past 30 days, proof of current or pending Social Security Disability, social security cards for every household member, current energy utility bills, and a current rent receipt if a renter.

Beginning October 1, qualified households who are disconnected from one or both energy utilities can call one of the attached sites for information and to make an appointment.  Required documentation must include a photo ID, proof of income for the past 30 days, social security cards for every household member, current energy utility bills, and a current rent receipt if a renter.

Beginning November 1, qualified households from the general public can call one of the attached sites for information and to make an appointment.  Required documentation must include a photo ID, proof of income for the past 30 days, social security cards for every household member, current energy utility bills, and a current rent receipt if a renter.

Lists of the sites that residents can call for appointments can also be picked up at the City of Rockford, Community Services Division office, City Plaza, 555 N. Court St.  Third floor.  Please be advised that the Community Services Division office will not be an intake site for LIHEAP this year and will not be taking calls for appointments.

The list of participating sites is attached. Click here

LIHEAP is funded by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.  The program will continue until funds are exhausted.
